Children’s Nutrition and Clean Water Program
With every sip of SAPINCA, you are supporting Misión Huascarán. A non-profit organisation that seeks to transform the lives of children living in extreme poverty in rural areas of Peru.
It’s hard to grasp, but each day these
children, starting from the age of four, must walk from one to four hours to go to school. In these rural areas, clean drinking water is hard to find. Most of it contains bacteria and parasites. That’s why we install
filters for clean drinking water at their homes and schools. We also give
them new (antibacterial) drinking bottles, made from recycled aluminium.
Because these children also suffer from malnutrition, we support them by providing
healthy vitamins and minerals at school twice a week.
We are now supporting 10 schools and 750 children. It’s a good start, but there is so much more work to be done. Our goal is to support 10,000 children in the upcoming five years.
The Irreversible Effects of Malnutrition
Anaemia is a condition that affects almost 25% of the world’s population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it’s mostly children within the pre-school age (47%). Peru is no stranger to this reality. Iron deficiency anaemia causes negative effects on the brain, extreme fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath and behavioural issues for infants.
Through the Children’s Nutrition and Clean Water Program we aim to support school-aged children between three and 12. The Peruvian state has unfortunately neglected this age group, therefore our efforts are aimed at not letting our guard down, as it could permanently affect their physical and intellectual well-being.
Our goals
- Reduce the prevalence of anemia to 5% in children from 3 to 12 years of age.
- Give workshops on healthy eating and drinking habits to the mothers.
- Provide 80% of organic gardens for families with children near schools and communities.
- Provide food supplements: Nutri Hierro cookies, vegetables, eggs and high-protein bread.
- Provide water supplements in the form of vitamins and minerals.
- Easy access to clean healthy drinking water for 10,000 children.
